DuPont Belle Plant — Belle, West Virginia

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that workers at E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company’s Belle Works chemical manufacturing plant in Belle, Kanawha County, West Virginia, sustained occupational asbestos exposure during decades of chemical processing operations beginning in the 1920s.

Facility Background

DuPont established the Belle Works on the Kanawha River in 1925, initially to produce ammonia by atmospheric nitrogen fixation. The plant later diversified into production of methanol, nylon intermediates, specialty chemicals, and agricultural chemicals. Operating continuously through the mid-twentieth century, the Belle plant became one of the anchor facilities of the Kanawha Valley’s chemical industry corridor.

Plaintiffs alleged that like other large chemical plants of the era, the Belle Works was extensively fitted with asbestos-containing insulation, gaskets, and refractory materials throughout its process systems, exposing workers in operations, maintenance, and construction trades.

Alleged Asbestos Pathways

Plaintiffs alleged in litigation that asbestos exposure occurred through multiple pathways at the Belle Works:

  • Process piping insulation throughout the plant: Plaintiffs alleged that insulators and pipefitters regularly installed, maintained, and removed asbestos pipe covering and block insulation on process lines carrying steam, ammonia, solvents, and chemical intermediates.
  • Ammonia synthesis and reactor systems: Plaintiffs alleged that high-pressure and high-temperature reactor systems required extensive asbestos insulation and asbestos-containing gaskets to manage operating conditions, exposing workers to fiber release during maintenance.
  • Boiler plant and steam systems: Plaintiffs alleged that maintenance workers, boilermakers, and insulator workers encountered asbestos-containing materials during boiler tube replacements and steam system maintenance.
  • Gaskets and valve seals: Plaintiffs alleged that the thousands of flanged pipe connections and valve assemblies throughout the Belle Works used asbestos compressed-fiber gaskets and packing materials.

West Virginia has a two-year statute of limitations under W. Va. Code § 55-2-12, running from the date of mesothelioma diagnosis. Wrongful death claims carry a two-year limit under W. Va. Code § 55-7-6.

Workers who were employed at DuPont Belle and who have since been diagnosed with mesothelioma or asbestos-related disease may have legal remedies available. Contact O’Brien Law Firm at (314) 237-3332 to discuss your work history and legal options at no cost.

Named Plants and Operating Era

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that specific named DuPont plants in West Virginia allegedly involved asbestos-containing materials during their principal operating eras. Documented plant footprint at Belle:

  • DuPont Belle Works — Ammonia Synthesis Complex — in Belle WV (Kanawha County, on the Kanawha River east of Charleston), high-pressure ammonia synthesis and atmospheric-nitrogen-fixation plant allegedly operating from 1926 through the modern era (progressively divested; DuPont exited most Belle operations 2016; portions to Chemours / Kureha / Bayer CropScience successors).
  • DuPont Belle Works — Methanol Plant — in Belle WV, high-pressure methanol synthesis unit allegedly operating from 1927 (the first commercial methanol-from-natural-gas plant in the world) through the mid-twentieth century.
  • DuPont Belle Works — Nylon Intermediates (Hexamethylenediamine / Adiponitrile) — in Belle WV, nylon-66 intermediates plant allegedly operating from the World War II era through the modern era in support of DuPont’s Seaford / Old Hickory / Chattanooga fiber plants.
  • DuPont Belle Works — Central Powerhouse and Utilities — in Belle WV, high-pressure steam and utility generating station serving the entire complex during the asbestos era.

Plant-Era ACM Narrative

At DuPont Belle Works, plaintiffs alleged the following plant-era asbestos exposure pathways during the principal U.S. asbestos era (approximately 1930s-1980):

  • Asbestos block insulation and asbestos pipe covering on high-pressure ammonia and methanol synthesis loops, syngas piping, superheater headers, and steam mains
  • Asbestos boiler lagging, asbestos block on boiler drums, and asbestos rope in access-door seals on the Belle powerhouse coal-fired boilers
  • Asbestos-refractory brick and asbestos block on the primary and secondary reformers, syngas compressor stages, and nylon-intermediate reactor systems
  • Asbestos compressed-sheet gaskets and asbestos braided packing at high-pressure flanged process connections, syngas compressor packing, and valve stems
  • Asbestos spray-applied fireproofing on structural steel in the ammonia synthesis and nylon-intermediates buildings during 1950s-1960s expansions
  • Asbestos-cement transite panels in Belle Works electrical rooms and control buildings

Trades and Local Union Coverage

Plaintiffs alleged that Belle Works plant work was performed by tradesmen from the following unions and Locals during the asbestos era:

  • HFIAW Insulators Local 80 — Charleston WV / Kanawha Valley jurisdiction — asbestos pipe covering and block insulation on Belle Works process piping, synthesis loops, and powerhouse
  • UA Pipefitters Local 625 — Charleston WV jurisdiction — flange bolt-up, high-pressure gasket work, and syngas / ammonia / methanol process piping at Belle
